The Freshman Student Council may not always be in the spotlight, but they play a major role in helping the Class of 2029 have a memorable first year at Nānākuli High and Intermediate School. From planning events to promoting school spirit, these ninth-grade officers shared what the job is really like and why they take pride in serving their classmates.
Behind every pep-filled event is a team that works to make it happen. For the freshmen, that team is their Student Council. They help with Spirit Weeks, Lip Sync battles, and even assist during school assemblies. Their work starts long before students show up to participate.
“Their primary duties include planning activities, promoting them, participating in them, and sharing important information with classmates about upcoming events, deadlines, and school initiatives,” said Class of 2029 advisor, Char Watson.
For many officers, the job is exciting because they get to play a part in shaping the school year.
“It is really fun,” said SC member Teinelaleleiosamoa Wilson. “All the events that we plan, you guys can know ahead of time.”
Freshman officers also welcome anyone interested in joining their team.
“Any freshman can email me directly or speak with any of our current SC officers,” Watson said. “They have done an excellent job communicating student interests to me.”
“Please join, please join,” Wilson added. “It is the most amazing thing ever.”
While the job comes with fun and rewarding moments, council members admit there are challenges too. Balancing schoolwork, strict deadlines, and expectations can be stressful. Communication is one of the biggest struggles.
“Communication is an issue. Trying to communicate with one another and the advisor when dealing with various activities like Spirit Week or making banners,” said SC member Isaiah Hauki-Pomaikai.
Still, the students say the hard work pays off.
“I am proud because I know I helped my class win,” said freshman member Shylee Lopes.
Another officer, Shaydi Piialoha, agreed. “It is really fun when we win Spirit Week because I know that I helped take pictures for it.”
Their advisor shares that same pride.
“I am very proud and satisfied with our Freshman Student Council. Despite a few challenges, such as me being assigned to the middle school, we made it work by establishing a structured format with a class president and vice president,” said Watson.
Even with events months away or just finishing, the Freshman Student Council continues to work hard to support their class. Watson says she sees how much the students put into every activity.
“I notice and see the SC officers’ efforts before, during, and after each event and encourage them to reflect on the responsibilities, challenges, and rewards of being an SC officer,” she said.
With their dedication and teamwork, the Class of 2029 officers hope to keep their class shining brighter throughout the year.
