NHIS Highlights from the 2016-2017 School Year:

Graduating Class Achievements:

  • Class of 2017 students received $1.5 million in Scholarships (most ever, beating previous record set by class of 2016).
  • Class of 2017 had 153 graduates, highest number of graduates since 1986.
  • 61% applied for financial aid, winning our school a first-place FAFSA completion rate prize, and 2nd place award based on greatest percent change.
  • Five students got Kapolei Foundation Scholarships
  • Highest ever rate of application for Na Hookama A Pauahi Scholarships to fund college going seniors.
  • Every CSAP student graduated earned enough credits to graduate with their class through project and community based education.

Achievements in academic excellence:

  • Three students won telescope time at the observatory through Maunakea Scholars Astronomy program
  • Culinary Arts Marketing Award (first place win over Punahou!)
  • Journalism awards for the staff of Ka Leo `o Nanakuli:
    • Best Editorial Public School written by Kylie Butler and Lahela Kaeo, 2nd in State.
    • Best Blog Public School written by Rosalie Hobbs, 2nd in State.
    • Best Portrait Photography Public School taken by Alysia Kepa, 2nd in State.
    • Rosalie Hobbs was also was awarded “Most Valuable Staffer.”
    • 3rd in the public school division for Best On-Line Newspaper.
  • Very successful first year Accelerated Reader program, thanks to our middle school team:

  • Improvements in proficiency in ELA and math (so far) according to preliminary SBA scores
  • ACT: 17 kids have a composite score of 19 or better (versus eight kids last year)
  • 74 AP examinees this year for ELA and Science (only 50 took it last year.)
  • Upward trends for early college course enrollment, dual credit, and AP!

School Events and Community partnerships:

  • Our students engaged in newly established cross age tutoring programs and prestigious internships at Makaha studios, Waianae Coast Comprehensive health center, and other partners courtesy of AVID!
  • 14th Annual Health Fair was incredibly successful with…
    • Excellent community partnerships with UH JABSOM
    • New CTE health topics were highlighted in the health fair.
    • Attended by all middle school students and all health pathway students
    • Great booths and presentations by created by students for the event.
  • Extremely successful first-ever Hearts for the Arts showcase.
  • Many great NHIS assemblies this year, especially the most recent Awards and Aloha assemblies.
  • High attendance at community events like Homecoming, SongFest, May Day
  • Very meaningful Senior and Junior class-wide assemblies.
  • First ever Junior Transition Day and a new summer program for rising juniors
  • Senior Transition day with highest participation ever in history of the school.
  • NPAC Achievements:
    • Gave 12 musical touring performances over the school year.
    • Produced 4 productions this school year
    • Over 9000 people this school year have seen NPAC perform live
    • Produced Ka Leo `O Nanakuli On-line Newspaper
    • Produced Daily Morning Bulletin
    • Produced 2 video segments for Hiki No PBS Student News Show
    • “Dream Big, Nanakuli at the Fringe” documentary was broadcast in over 30 cities across the nation on National PBS stations this school year

Faculty Achievements:

  • Lower teacher turnover rate, with only four teachers departing this year.
  • First ever faculty Book study with 100% teacher participation.
  • Successful Tier-1 MTSS implementation
  • Behavioral screener
  • Five focus strategies (with further expansion on all 17 proactive classroom management strategies)
  • Consistent meetings throughout the year.
  • Increase in team conversations through grade level collaboration efforts.
  • The fewest number of initial SPED referrals we’ve ever had.
  • Fewer chapter 19 referrals than last year.
  • Fuel Ed, a new and more user-friendly online learning platform, will enhance our education efforts next year.
  • The most positive WASC report we’ve received in the last decade
  • National (RAMP) Certification for NHIS Counselors
  • Collection of 80% of teachers’ pacing guides into school document. (During the original Synergy school review, we had only 40%. High achieving schools have 100%)
