After being a part of the Nānākuli High and Intermediate ohana for 20 years, Assistant Principal Kainoa Hopfe’s last day was Friday, January 10, 2025.
Hopfe moved to Maui to be closer to his ohana and took a vice principal position at Baldwin High School.
Throughout the years, Hopfe has gotten the opportunity to be a teacher of multiple subjects, an instructional coach, and a school administrator. He had the opportunity to serve the school and community in many different ways.
“Well, I’m really saddened. He’s a fantastic assistant principal, but I understand that in order for personal growth, sometimes we have to do what is difficult for us,” said Pam Yuen, NHIS Librarian. “I just want the very best for him, I really do.”
Throughout Hopfe’s many years at NHIS, his best memories are personal as well as his connection to the community.
“Best memories were to be able to grow strong roots in Nānākuli. I appreciate the opportunity to be on stage to give my daughter and son their diploma. Also, my best memories are building relationships with students, parents, faculty, and community partners in Nānākuli.”
Todd Sibley, NHIS Social Studies teacher, said, “We’re losing a big personality, and I’m losing a big mentor, but I want him to be happy, and I want him and his family to do well.”
Hopfe leaving has brought many warmhearted goodbyes and last words.
“I wish him the very best, I hope all the success in the world to him,” said Kevin Tynan, NHIS Instructional Coach and Data Coordinator.
Hopfe said, “I will miss Nānākuli but this kaiāulu will be forever in my heart. EŌ Nānākuli! Kulia i ka Nu’u.”

The impact to my kids lives can never have enough thank you. Because of his love and dedication to the kids my daughter as a teen mom at 15 is now a senior with hopes of graduating this year. I’m sure she was the cause of his many white hairs as she was a first name bases with him lol. This year she will graduate with a high school diploma and dreams to succeed in life because he never gave up on her and always pushed her even when she didn’t want to.. He stayed on her even called when she didn’t go to school. He found alternative learning for her while she was on bed rest as a high risk pregnancy. Baldwin I hope you know how great of a man you folks are receiving. Truly you will be missed by the students but especially us parents. Thank you for being the role model and hope the next generation needs.
